The Department of Geography, Geology, and Planning has 20 full time faculty (18 ranked faculty) and two full-time staff spanning a broad range of expertise and interests across the disciplines it houses (https://geosciences.missouristate.edu). There are 12 faculty supporting the Geography and Sustainability, Geospatial Sciences, and Planning programs. The department grants undergraduate degrees in four majors: Geography, Geology, Planning, and Geospatial Science; an M.S. in Geography and Geology; and a broad array of certificate programs. Additionally, we participate in interdisciplinary graduate programs in Applied Science and Environmental Management. The department also houses the Center for Resource Planning and Management (CRPM) with 9 professional staff members and the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institutes (OEWRI) with 4 professional staff members.

History of the University:
Missouri State University was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. During its early years, the institution’s primary purpose was preparing teachers for the public school systems in the southwest region of Missouri. In 2005 the institution was renamed Missouri State University, reflecting its enrollment of tens of thousands of students, as well as higher admissions standards and increased graduate programs. MSU is the designated Public Affairs university for the state of Missouri and the three broad pillars of ethical leadership, cultural competence, and community engagement are tightly woven into the academic curricula, outreach goals, and mission of the university.
