Description

The Department of Geography, Planning, & Sustainability welcomes applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of urban and regional planning, focusing on quantitative planning methods, big data analysis, data visualization, urban and regional policy analysis, and/or smart cities. Candidates that link their scholarship and teaching to planning law, land use law, and/or public engagement through the lens of the climate and biodiversity crises and/or environmental planning will be exceptionally competitive for this position.

Rowan University is currently classified as an R-2 (high research activity) institution, with initiatives to move to R-1 (very-high research activity).  The successful candidate will demonstrate early success at research and publication with established external grants or potential to receive them, particularly federal grants.  Our department offers an undergraduate B.S. in Community and Environmental Planning and an M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning, along with 3 other degree programs in GIS, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, and Geography.  Scholars hired in the School of Earth & Environment will have outstanding communication skills, a deep commitment to advancing solutions to the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis, and will have demonstrated dedication to sharing their scholarship with the public through various outreach initiatives.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as appropriate preparation that includes representative course syllabi and assignments, teaching experience, and other evidence of effectiveness.  The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in planning, including planning methods and metropolitan and regional governance.

The Department values service to the University and our communities, and the successful candidate will be expected to engage in appropriate service.  The Department also values the AICP credential and the Professional Planning (New Jersey specific) license; the successful candidate should possess either or both of these credentials or outline a commitment to obtaining them as part of future professional development.  A Ph.D. in planning from a university with a PAB-accredited program is required at the time of hire.

Rowan University is a Carnegie-classified Doctoral University (R2) with approximately 17,000 students. Its main campus is located in Glassboro, N.J., 20-miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Jean & Ric Edelman Fossil Park & Museum (www.rowan.edu/fossils), located only 4 miles from campus, is closely associated with the School of Earth & Environment and provides unique opportunities and teaching resources to faculty members and students. Additionally, the School of Earth & Environment is integral to Rowan’s Catalysts for Sustainability program, which coalesces a group of scholars from each of the university’s schools and colleges around the themes of the climate and biodiversity crises. The Department of Geography, Planning & Sustainability is housed in the new Discovery Hall, which opened in the Fall of 2021.
