University of Virginia
Charlottesville, Virginia, United States

The Department of Engineering Systems and Environment at the University of Virginia is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a joint project with the Urban and Environmental Planning in the School of Architecture and the Darden School of Business.

The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary research project using mobile eyetracking technology to capture human response to complex arrays of stimuli from urban environments. Responses will be evaluated within a conceptual framework that links public and private action - right-of-way design, land use patterns, commercial design and marketing - to environmental features. During this one-year project, we will develop the methodology and pilot it with a small sample of respondents engaging in three types of everyday travel: walking, being a passenger in a vehicle, and driving a vehicle. The successful candidate will design and carry out these experiments, with duties including but not limited to: site selection, participant recruitment, equipment purchase and management, data collection, and data analysis. The candidate will work with current graduate students and train new graduate students, assist with data collection, analysis and reporting, and manuscript writing.

A Ph.D. in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field is required by the start date.  Preferred skills include experience working with mobile eyetracking equipment, human factors research, interactive experimental design, and advanced statistical modeling methods.  Experience with R and Python is preferred.
